The quarterly report, which measured thousands of attacks from around the world, attributes the skyrocketing attacks to servers enabled with Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC), a significant new risk if not properly configured.
- Distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks using domain name server (DNS) amplification increased for more than 357% in the fourth quarter of 2017, compared to 2016.
- The number of DNS reflection attacks soar 109.98% over the preceding quarter.
- DNS amplification, UDP, and IP fragmentation contributed for the top three attack vectors in the quarter, with 16.10%, 15.31%, and 12.18% respectively.
- More than 56% of all attacks exploit multiple vector combinations.
